The other three characters are Nero, a man who was once a hero, but is now plagued by demons, Vergil, the twin brother of Dante and who has a demon and angel hybrid inside his body, and Lady, Vergil's love interest and former ally. The game has four playable characters, with Dante being the standard character for the series. Due to the variety of attacks the combos are some of the longest in any game, with the player able to chain attacks in order to perform an even more powerful attack. The Explosive Blade has a four button attack consisting of Kick, Throwing knife, Explosion and Jump, while the Chaos Blade has a four button attack consisting of Jump, Heavy Blade, Double Stab and Flying kick. For example, the Devil Breaker has a four button attack consisting of Slash, Punch, Tear and Jump.
Each weapon has a different set of attacks, with each one performed with a different button combination. The weapons are quite a bit different from the ones used in the PS2 title, with some weapons such as the Devil Breaker, the Explosive Blade and the Chaos Blade being replaced by new ones.
